Reuse, repurpose and repair

We were approached by this leading girls’ college to reimagine their learning centre as a catalyst for a new approach to teaching and education. The brief was driven by a desire to move beyond traditional, static learning environments and create spaces that actively support contemporary educational models grounded in research, wellbeing and adaptability.

Drawing on neuroscience and biophilic design principles, the project focused on creating active learning environments that facilitate the transition from conventional teaching to blended, student-centred modes of learning. This approach reflects a strong commitment by the academic staff to provide an environment that can meaningfully enhance engagement, collaboration and learning outcomes.

Structural constraints required creative and considered problem-solving. Rather than altering the building fabric, the transformation was achieved through thoughtful interventions in surface finishes, material textures, lighting design, integrated IT and communications infrastructure, colour strategy, furniture mobility and sustainable material choices. Each decision was informed by research into how sensory environments influence cognition, focus and emotional regulation.

A series of informal meeting and collaboration zones were introduced to encourage dialogue, peer learning and shared discovery. Natural light was maximised and carefully distributed throughout the centre to support cognitive performance and reduce fatigue. Visual continuity across spaces reinforces spatial legibility and ease of movement, helping students feel grounded and confident within the environment.

Together, these elements foster a strong sense of community and belonging. The revitalised learning centre now functions as a dynamic academic hub that supports curiosity, connection and independent thinking, while equipping students with the skills and mindset needed to navigate an increasingly complex and global future.
